RED DRAGON

A Poem by: Fernando de Mello Pimentel

You're the mighty giant from the far east
Greediness has turned you into a ferocious beast
The world's become your own private feast
Petrol, iron and coal are your power yeast

Your body's been stretching year after year
Boosted by efficiency and economies of scale
You've grown so much, the whole world's in fear

You're the guardian of 1.3 billion souls,
whose lives you keep under strict control
What else do we need to know?

You're on top of the planet's food chain
You're not in for the loss, but for the gain
Even the bald eagle felt the effect of your growing pains

You're certainly not an easy creature to tame
You've won the most gold medals in the Beijing Games
Your ambition is scorching like the olympic flames

Throughout your life, you've witnessed many men of fame
Mao was one of them. He was never ashamed
of all the innocent men he killed and framed

The clash between modernity and your millenar traditions
Has left you in some sort of raging contradiction
Although your power is ubiquitous, you're trapped in affliction

But yin & yang has always been part of your wild nature
It has made you who you are. A source of inimitable stature
You're the mighty Red Dragon. You're God's favorite creature.
